The unforgiven
Sitting at 10 episodes as I write this, each one around an hour long.
Basically, it's an hour of tripped out found sounds, Pathe news reels, military brass bands, and voices from the ether spanning across time and space. Menacing echoes from a parallel military universe that's constantly at war with itself. Recommended uneasy listening.
Pangaea
Currently sitting at 33 shows, mostly around an hour long and themed.
Quality musical choices with a few clips in between. The music spans the globe and covers a multitude of genres, if you can think of a genre, it's probably covered somewhere. Sometimes weird, sometimes obscure, but always top notch.
Andrew Weatherall - Music's not for everyone
The Guv'nor, all round music legend who sadly departed this life in February 2020 put out a monthly two hour show on NTS radio. Each show was a magical trip around his musical universe, and what a universe it was, covering reggae, rockabilly, techno, electronic, psychedelic rock, post punk, Indian classical, dub, the list goes on and on. The show ran from 1st July 2014 up until 30th Jan 2020 and all episodes are available on the NTS radio site.
Sounds Of North American Frogs
If you want to put your mental stamina to the test have a listen to this. An hour of all your favourite frog calls, narrated by none other than Charles m. Bogert. When listening to this you may ask yourself why? I don't think even Sir David Attenborough himself could answer that one.
Boxout.fm
This isn't a single show but a whole radio station! Pin back your lugholes and prepare for some quality programmes straight outta New Delhi, India. Boxout.fm broadcast all day, every day, all year round with a vast array of resident djs as well as special guests. Hip hop, Jungle, world music, ambient, techno, bollywood, neurofunk, trap, lo-fi.....basically whatever makes your jelly shake.
Brazilian Birds Radio
I shit you not. 24 hours a day Brazilian birds - that's it, just birds.
Radio MDZHB
If you have a shortwave receiver, tune it to 4625 kHz. You’ll hear something that on the surface sounds strange, but the reality is even stranger still....
For 35 years, MDZhB has been broadcasting a dull, monotonous tone. Every few seconds it’s joined by a second sound, like some ghostly ship sounding its foghorn. Then the drone continues. Once or twice a week, a man or woman will read out some words in Russian, such as “dinghy” or “farming specialist”. And that’s it.
Grindcore - The Early Years
God bless NTS radio for bringing us an hour of obscure classics from the early years of grindcore. Featuring family favourites from the likes of Carcass, Gore Beyond Necropsy, lifeless vomit & Malignant Tumour - How can you forget "Phlatulent manifestation of alcaligenes faecalis" or "Sonic hate spleen rupture."
My only gripe is that it's only an hour long.
The Little Fears
An old Youtube channel that, perhaps unintentionally, is a mixture of ASMR and your fear of unknown dark corners and slightly open closet doors. In her videos, the narrator calmly describes short stories that build in suspense and unease. Her voice is soothing, the kind of voice that would help you slip into sleep but at the same time it's a bit creepy and claustrophobic. Unfortunately, it looks like she doesn’t upload anymore, but what’s on her channel is worth a watch if you’re into being creeped out before bed.
Cambridge Train Sounds
Ever wanted to know what it sounds like to be riding a 3 carriage Mk3quarryman on a 10 metre track at 10Km where the track join gap is 5mm on 1m track guage? Well, if you have today is your lucky day! This jolly little page allows you to create your very own dream train journey by adjusting the settings on the page via sliders, it then generates the audio to produce a reconstruction of a past train journey. Bliss. Pass the Hobnobs.
Radio ISS (Not to confused with Radio ISIS)
Ever wondered what the inhabitants of the international space station listen to on the radio? Of course, you have. Well now we have the answer, RadioISS tracks the position of the ISS, and plays the "nearest" audio stream at that moment from around the world. As well as a live map showing where the space station is positioned there is also a live HD video coming from the ISS of the earth below. If you don't see any video, the service may be temporarily down, or it might just be dark out.
Eryk Salvaggio
If a mushroom could make music, what would it sound like? According to Eryk it would sound like his album, that's because it's the mushrooms who made it. Tapping into the mushrooms nervous system (yes, they do sort of have one) he intercepts the signals and translates them into electronic sounds. Research suggests that mushrooms have their own “language,” built from voltage spikes sent through the underground rhizomatic network that connects them. According to researcher Andrew Adamatzky, this language comprises of at least 50 “words” or repeatable patterns. Remember that next time you are about to chomp down on one.
Dubrek Sound Lab
From the distant past of 2018/19. Thirteen shows, two hours each, that's a lot of music. Thankfully it's all good music sprinkled with the ramblings of two men clearly struggling with their grip on reality, gladly they seem to have a firm grip on all kinds of great music with which to tantalise your listening holes.
